Extremely Clear by Crronik
We tried one of Graco’s top of the line baby monitors that was highly recommended. We live in a pre-war apartment in manhattan with thick walls and we needed a monitor that would broadcast from the baby’s room to the nanny’s room on the opposite end of the apartment. The Graco that wasn’t “Dect” technology just didn’t cut it for us. Not only did it not maintain the connection to the base unit in the back room, when it did it was so static-y that I couldn’t imagine someone sleeping with this type of erratic white noise. This is not a general negative review for the Graco, but I mention it to illustrate that it just didnt work for us in our apartment.

The Philips, on the other hand, with its Dect technology, is crystal clear. So crystal clear in fact that you have to look at the indicator light to see if its on - there is no static! Plus it works clear across our apartment and when you establish the link from the parent unit, you dont have to be standing right on top of the baby unit to make a connection. I often turn on the parent unit in another room and it establishes a link to the baby unit easily. I also enjoy having the two parent units. Besides the increased coverage, it also gives you the option to charge one while the other is in use. A simple (and attractive!) design makes this easy to use, esp for non-techies like my wife.

Crystal clear reception throughout house by D. Miller
This product delivers what it promises. It provides crystal clear reception throughout the house and even as far as 1/4 mile down the street. It does not interfere with a wireless network or cordless phones. The two-way function is excellent and we are thrilled overall with the quality.

Great Purchase by Joseph Ercole
I really like this monitor. I haven’t used monitors in the past but its very sensitive and can be used like a walkie talkie system.

I’ve kept my monitors going overnight without any problem. I think people complaining about battery power either got a defective handset or didn’t condition the batteries like the manual says to (fully discharge, charge for 14 hours, repeat this 4 times) before using more casually.

I don’t regret this purchase at all.

Don’t fall for this gimmick baby monitor! by Andrew Doemling
I am the parent of two babies and have had in-depth experience with many baby monitors. I have tried a few and sent them back, and also have kept a couple for a while. Let me preface this by saying that I have an engineering degree and I am a total techno geek. I was excited to hear about this relatively new 1.9 GHZ frequency monitor from Phillips for a baby monitor.

Unfortunately, after one day with this monitor, it is already getting returned. Why you ask? For one major reason, this monitor’s volume level is way too low, even when the volume is turned all the way up, as well as the sensitivity level being up. Yes, you can hear your baby cry on this monitor. However, most parents don’t need a monitor for that! Many parents (especially new ones!) want the comfort of practically being able to hear their baby breath through their monitor. More importantly, if a baby is choking or faintly struggling with something, there is a very good chance that the parent units for this monitor will not be able to pick up these faint sounds.

The monitor itself is very sleek. The ergonomic design is good, however, without having an acceptable volume, what good is this monitor? I seriously am beginning to think that many of the reviews for this product were written by people who have a vested interest in Phillips, either that, by parents who are using a baby monitor for the first time! Many parents want to be able to hear the faintest sound when watching TV, or having a conversation on the phone, well, you just cannot hear anything except for medium-loud cries with this monitor with any background noise where the parent unit is.

That being said, if you live in a crowded apartment complex or the city, the faint volume may be acceptable in a trade-off for privacy that this monitor supplies. Most people out there live in the suburbs, so this should not be a factor.

Also, three other negatives for this monitor are: 1. The parent units on this monitor take up to 16 hours to fully charge!!! 2. Although, these units have no interference with a 900 mhz monitor, if you think that you can operate this monitor with another 900 mhz monitor in the room, think again. The Phillips monitor will work fine, BUT, the 900 mhz monitor will have major interference with the DECT monitor! I tested this on two different 900 mhz monitors next to the Phillips DECT parent units. 3. I think people are confusing crystal clear reception with very low volume! For a quick experiment, try playing music near the main receiver unit. Through the parent unit on this Phillips monitor, the volume will go up and down from the music playing (this may be caused by the parent units automatically changing channels), and I still am able to hear some fuzz on the DECT parent units. Again, this is a real world test compared to much cheaper monitors that out perform this one!

Anyway, I know it is very hard to purchase a monitor for something as precious as your baby. Usually, in my mind, I truly think items that cost more are usually much better than cheaper items. However, in this case, you will get a far better performance with a much cheaper (3rd or 4th) generation 900 mhz (or even 2.4 Ghz monitor if you don’t have wireless Internet in or near your house) baby monitor. I encourage you to try out a few monitors before settling on one. Never settle for your baby!

If Phillips can fix their volume problems, and also their horrible battery life, they could truly have a baby monitor that is better than the competition. This is the perfect example of Consumer Reports being way off the mark and being sold on a gimmick that just does not perform up to the competition…
